Citizenship
Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 6:57PM Congratulations to my friend Jason Kenney for beefing up the Citizenship Guide so that it actually reflects, you know, Canada.
Frankly all Canadians should take a run at the test. Based on survey results from groups like Historica even a large majority of native born Canadians have what we'll call a "knowledge deficit" when it comes to knowing even that our first Prime Minister was Sir John A. Macdonald.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement of our education system, but then again everyone has a personal responsibility to know the basics. It's really the price you pay if you want to wear the proud mantle of, "Citizen".
If you don't have the context of history its hard to speak out credibly on the current issues, but then again you just have to go online and read some of the responses to media articles and you'll see that ignorance is no impediment to having a firmly held opinion.
